Great dinner. Went with four others and all were raving!

We think the burgers at West Reading Tavern are the best we've ever had. And their interesting selection of draft beers is appreciated. It's comfy and cozy, and a great place to unwind.

I was pleasantly surprised by the dining experience I had at the West Reading Tavern. I went here with my mother the other night for dinner and some beers and I was very impressed with the service. The bartenders were working hard to explain all of the interesting beers they had on tap. The great beers were really the highlight of the evening. They were much better than the food, but that is OK for a casual after work bar. The other highlight was the homemade desserts. We split the key lime pie, and it was exceptional. I am very impressed with the new and improved West Reading, and this bar adds to my new positive image of this hip small town.

Cozy & Comfortable Atmosphere; Warm & Friendly Staff; Great Food. My son and I ate here 2 nights. 4 appetizers, 4 meals, 4 deserts; ALL GREAT! The Steaks and The Seafood were Absolutely Outstanding. We also enjoyed live music and the band was far better than we would have expected. We will return there when we visit next year.

Fantastic service! My first time eating here, I found the service and employees extremely friendly! Our waitress was top notch! The food is delicious. You can tell they are using fresh ingredients, by the quality of the food. The menu is small but any good restaurant has a select menu so they are able to focus on making the best dish for you. (Duh). It is a bit pricey but you are paying for quality. The atmosphere is intimant, cozy and warm.

Nice beer selection from the bar. 5 onion cream soup was excellent. Nice oniony flavor "softened" by the creamy texture. Smallish crouton covered in cheese. This is a rich soup so a cup is plenty. Burgers that my three friends ordered looked quite good, 9 oz patties I believe. French fries were hand cut and well worth the carbs. My wiener schnitzel was burnt on the edges, crunchy in fact. The bed of noodles were overcooked. However, the leek onion cream sauce was smooth and softened the noodles enough to eat them. I didn't taste the burgers but my friends finished them off happily. Apparently you need to stick to the onion soup and burgers.

Would have given you guys 4 stars for the duck fat fries, truffle fries, and the beer selection, but your tavern seafood salad gave my wife food poisoning. As she was eating it she said it was the worst salad she ever had. She should have stopped at the first bite.... Now we're afraid to go back and probably won't. At least there are a few half way decent other restaurants in the area.

What the hell happened to this place? This place was amazing when Steve ran it. Haven't been here in a long long while and decided to stop in since we were in Reading. First thing we were greeted with was if we had reservations? At 5:00??? No. The place was literally empty. Off to a bad start. Never got asked this before. Looked at the menu and one of the best things on the menu was the fishermans chowder, now gone. We should have stuck with a few beers and left. Unfort. I got their pathetic attempt at a salmon BLT. I'm going through my sandwich, thinking where the hell is the salmon?!? and there it was the smallest, itty bitty chunk of burnt salmon you ever saw. I said something to our waitress who looked absolutely shocked and the new owner, I guess Mark, from the other reviews, informed me that the salmon is weighed. Wtf. Steve is your Dad??? I can't believe it. Only good thing here is their doneworkin beer. Thank goodness he didn't change that!! The food sucks, period. Don't bother eating here. What a sad sad day. Steve come back!!!!! And bring your old chef too!

The 1 star is for service. We were the only people @ the bar and the staff was too busy talking to wait on us.

The Sunday special is great, 8 bucks for a personal pizza and beer! The bartender was fantastic, he took the time to explain everything offered and was very attentive even though there were several other people to serve. Overall it was an A+ experience, however most of the regular menu items seemed out of our price range, but none the less we will defiantly be back for the specials.

Very disappointing. Overpriced and the food really wasn't that good. Very average. The evening didn't start well after getting attitude from the hostess bc we didn't have reservations and it's not like they didn't have empty tables. And really a $1.25 charge for blue cheese dressing on my salad. Hadn't been there for yrs and won't be going back anytime soon.

2 stars for the food 4 stars for the service ------------------------------------------- We went to the West Reading Tavern on a Thursday night right when they opened the dining room for dinner at 5 p.m. Upon entering the dining room, a server told us to sit where we wanted. West Reading Tavern's décor is that of an old English pub with lots of dark wood beams and some stained glass windows. The end result is a dark, drab setting with tired décor. Despite all that, the place was clean. We started off with our drink orders. I had a chocolate martini which was quite good and was the best part of the meal. My husband had a beer. Each meal comes with "button bread" which has poppy seeds and sesame seeds on it. The bread actually was very good and had a homemade taste to it. I asked the server if the restaurant made this bread. She said that it comes from a bakery named Selena's. At the time we went, they were offering some dinner specials to celebrate their anniversary. We both decided to order off the special menu. Soup and salad came with each entrée. I got a cup of onion soup and a salad while my husband opted just for the salad. The salad was good, if uninspiring and the balsamic vinaigrette was decent. The onion soup had a hearty beef flavored broth---not the best I've ever had but far from the worst. For my main course, I chose sea bass served on spaghetti with a scampi sauce, while my husband chose the Jack Daniels pork chops. The sea bass was properly prepared, thus it was moist and flaky. The scampi pasta was...different as I've never seen an item with scampi that didn't have shrimp in it. My husband said his pork chops were over cooked and not very lean as there was some fat on them. Service was quite good and attentive and our server was friendly. Even though the place wasn't busy, they kitchen was on the slow side. Before the tip, dinner cost $66 + change. We both left feeling like it wasn't worth that much money. Oh well...lesson learned. The bar is very popular with the locals. By the time we finished dinner, nearly every seat was taken. I don't think we'll go back here again.

This place has it all, fantastic food complimented by fantastic beer and the service was absolutely the best there was not one moment when my glass was empty and that says a lot to me. It's definitely worth stopping in if you happen to be on penn ave.

I love going to the West Reading Tavern. I've always had great customer service and delicious food. Wide selection if beers and cider on tap plus more in bottles. Nice wine list. I'm usually there for lunch or late, and I've enjoyed all of my food. Once, I said I'd marry their pulled pork sandwich. It's so good! So are their soups, burgers, fries, chicken. I'm getting hungry typing this.

Let me open with this - there is NOTHING on the menu for vegans, and only one thing for vegetarians. However, they were more than willing to cater to my needs and were careful in doing so. They made me a penne with a great tomato sauce - and some steamed vegetables for a side. The bartender even thought of me when bringing out house bread and butter - she brought me a small saucer of olive oil to dip in. Quite nice! The prices were moderate and for the average joe, this place doesn't seem half bad. Eh, it worked for dinner - but I prob won't return.

Wound up here by chance as not many restaurants open on Mondays in town. So happy we did! It was fantastic! Our server, Amy Lynn was amazing. She recommended us starting with Truffle Fries with Malt Vinegar Aioli - just amazing! I then had the Wiener Schnnitzel and my mom had the Manchester by the Sea. Both dishes were divine. They came with a salad of fresh greens from a local farm and homemade croutons. We both had the home made blue cheese dressing and agreed it was the best we have had. We didn't save any room for dessert. I am looking forward to returning the next time we are in the area. The only negative I can think of is the cost. If you are looking for inexpensive meals, this is not the place. If you want a great meal, definitely try this place and ask for Amy Lynn. You won't be sorry!!

WOW. $23.95 for three scallops over orzo??? And the meal was cold. The place was NOT crowded at all yet most of our dinners were cold. Came here for lunch, the first time we've been back in 5 years due to new ownership and hearing negative reviews since the change. I am so disappointed. Fool me once.....

I stopped by recently to visit a good pal who works here. Yes, the menu is full of typical pub food with a limited selection for those who do not eat meat. I walked off with a salad but it was placed in a lovely eco-friendly to-go container made of sturdy paper. I never would have guessed that this age-old Berks County landmark would embrace a much appreciated 'none, nada, zippo Styrofoam' approach (five stars!). Thank you, West Reading Tavern. I'd love to see a menu update with more vegetable dishes, even if only in appetizer portions or perhaps, hummus, fruit & cheese platters or spicy olives to enjoy at the bar. I would probably visit more often, especially during the winter months because this place is pretty cozy when it's cold outside.

We are newbies to Reading but have fallen in love with West Reading Tavern! Great selection and knowledge of beers and a very attentive and super friendly staff and management! Must haves: mussels, the fries with the truffle sauce, crab mac and cheese. Yummo! Fiancé enjoys the burger and chili (if you're a meat eater). Favorite is the Dunworkin (spelling) beer on draft but they always have an eclectic selection.

This cozy old-school place has added a vegan risotto to their menu, as well as an asparagus appetizer that is vegan. Thank you! Bartenders are always incredibly sweet, though we miss Sarah. Really nice beers on draft here too.

Comfortable old-school style. The West Reading Tavern has remained a classic touchstone on Penn Avenue. Great for lunch, dinner, or just for drinks at the bar. Good food, good service. The specials are usually worth checking out. I had the cod and chips which were nicely done. My date had a rather nice short rib sandwich. If you haven't been there, it's worth a look.

Kathleen, the bartender was super helpful in navigating the happy hour specials and recommended some good munchies (mussels and fries) and let us know that Mondays are buy one mussels dish get one free (with extra flavors!). The apps were delicious! Will definitely be coming back for happy hours and dinner very soon!

Was a random pick from walking down the street looking for a place to eat before the Royals playoff game. The hook was the peg legend sea captain carving holding open the door. We sat at the bar and ordered some beers. They have a nice selection of German beers on tap. Had the pulled pork sandwich, which was filling and full of flavor. The service folks were very nice.

My family was in Reading for a wedding and stumbled across the Tavern on Friday. The food was great and the service was wonderful. We decided to return the next day with a party of twelve. What a mistake! The service was slow and obnoxious, the kitchen even slower. Our waitress decided we should be put to work and made us pass menus and drinks and write posted notes to show where the appetizers should be served. She thought she was humorous but it was quite annoying. When we finally got served, the food was mediocre. Must have been a different staff from the day before. My elderly father complained that his toast on the sandwich was too hard and the waitress stuck her finger in the bread and said it wasn't bad. Maybe The locals are impressed, as a visitor tere are much better places in the near by towns to eat.

This a nice warm old school bar with a good food menu. What sets this place apart is their awesome beer selection. They carry a very nice array of brews from around the world on tap and their taps are always changing. For a "Tavern" they seem to have more of an upscale food selection. Everything was well prepared and they use quality ingredients. This is a great date night type of a bar that is never crowded or too loud. I will definitely go back soon.

West Reading Tavern feels a place where everybody knows your name, or will soon if you go there enough! What a warm atmosphere and great service and food. Burger, Steak Salad, Roast Beef Au Jus, Chili, feels like it was made at home. The Beer is always cold, food always good, service always pleasant.

I've been working in West Reading for almost three months and have eaten at 70% of the local restaurants. So far, this one had the best take out I've had. I ordered late one evening and the waitress/bartender was very kind. When I picked up my order she was just as kind in person. The food was great, I had a chef salad, french onion soup and the crab balls. All were freshly prepared and tasty. I had just had french onion soup at two other locations and it was terrible. I'll definitely go back!!

We are local and we go Tues-Thurs over the summer for their clambakes. In fact, we'll be there tonight! They have a varied menu and great food. A great choice in restaurants in the West Reading area. Enjoy...

A warm pub atmosphere, complete with fireplace and comfy wooden chairs, awaits inside the West Reading Tavern. Oh, and the food is quite good too. Grab a bowl of chili, a burger, or a salad for lunch. Or dig into a larger meal at dinner time. It's also a great place to drink, with a healthy beer selection and full bar.

This is one of those places that's nice to visit on a cold night and either get a beer at the bar or a warm meal in the dining room. It's got that great English tavern style feel. I can barely remember what I had to eat, which says something about the food, but I was satisfied.

Took my mother there yesterday (September 4) for lunch. I ordered the shrimp rosa soup, which appeared to have a fragment of shrimp in an otherwise milky, pink, and slightly salty broth. The server, when serving it, asked me if it was ok if there were mushrooms in it. Seemed a bit odd to announce it as it was served. When she cleared, she asked about how the soup was and I told her of my concerns and summarized "it was not very good". My mother and I split their Cobb salad. Tiny bits of vegetable and huge pieces of lettuce. Made it difficult to eat. My understanding of a good chopped salad is that all components are roughly equal in size. This was not. The truffle fries were attractively served. The were not well fried and arrived at the table browned but soggy/not crispy. They were very hot. Were they pre-fried and microwaved? My mother and I did not have a good understanding do what the other wanted when we placed our order. She subsequently ordered a sandwich. About 10 minutes after we placed the order, the server still had not brought it, and went to another table and she and another employee dressed in black and white pajama bottoms engaged the woman there in a long conversation about her baby. I attempted to get the server's attention, and finally shouted her name, startling her, in order to attend to us. We asked for her to prepare the sandwich to go. My mother voiced the concern that our making waves might cause one of them to mess with her food. When the check arrived there was no apology for the delay and the soup was still on the bill. I paid the check and we left. I expressed my concerns regarding the quality of the soup, the server's response, and our treatment by the server to the bartender in the front bar and gave her my contact information. She said the manager would contact me. I have heard nothing yet.

Sure not what it once was...,, ever since the son Mark got involved it went down hill. Slow service and food is far from what it was at one time. All they seem to be interested in now is serving beer not food. Don't have to wait for a table like you use too when it was good.
